I live in Minnesota where winter is ridiculously cold. When our breath is frozen and our teeth are chattering, our thoughts often drift to a warmer time and all the things we can’t wait to do when the temps rise again. This time of year is the perfect time of year to make a spring and summer blessings jar.
You don’t need a lot for this project—just a jar or container of some sort, paper, something to write with, and memories of all the things you love about the warm weather and/or things you’re planning to do this year when it warms up.
The purpose of the spring and summer blessings jar is twofold. First, it gets you thinking about all the things you love about spring and summer.
The beach. Field trips with friends. The Steam Summer Sale. Eating ice cream without getting cold. Opening the windows. Fishing from shore. Planting the garden. Baby chicks.
The second purpose (and I think this is the bigger one) comes when the weather warms up and you open this jar. It is full of all the things we forget about the season when we’re in the middle of it. It’s full of the things we said we couldn’t wait to do when it got warmer – the things we always forget about when the season actually arrives. It helps us remember that in the middle of winter, we were not able to do all these things. It helps us to feel thankful and not take the warm temps for granted.
The sun stays out later. Picnics. Campfires with friends. Picking up agates on the dirt road. Digging and riding bikes and working the garage on motors without having to start the heater. Geocaching. Driving to anywhere we want and not worrying about ice or snow.
Start filling it up with all the things you’re looking forward to.
Garage sales. Walking barefoot. Swimming in the river. Being able to run outside instead of on the treadmill in the basement. Sitting under the tree in the front yard and playing your guitar.
Let everyone in the family get in on the project. Place the spring and summer blessings jar in a central place of your home so it can be added to as you think of things.
A spring and summer blessings jar is the perfect winter project. It gets your mind off the cold and helps you start a to-do list of great warm weather activities. What spring and summer blessings can your family put in the jar?
(You can also do this project in the heat of summer and make a winter blessings jar.)
